Graphic design is not art. It's not intended to be. It can and should be aesthetically pleasing, but it isn't intended to be put on display in a museum and hailed as the greatest creative work in existence by someone barefoot, wearing organic clothing, sipping on a soy vegan latte, and a Prius key in their pocket. Graphic design needs to communicate more than anything. It needs to share your message, whatever that may be. And if your message is that organic clothes, soy vegan lattes, and hybrid's are the only way to live, that's perfectly fine. Just remember that shoes are required in most businesses. Many businesses don't need a full-time graphic designer on staff. They just need content, images, etc. created and many need it with fast turnaround.

Purpose

Are you trying to communicate basic information to someone about something? Time, Date, Location, Name? It doesn't need to be complicated, it needs to be clear. Overly designed graphics lead to confusion and lack of clarity.

Branded

Your graphics should be clearly identified as... you. This can be done with a logo, watermark, color scheme, font, etc. When people see it, they need to know instantly (or at least without much effort) that it belongs to or is connected to you.

Creative

There are times when you need something creative. You need something that catches the eye. This is a very subjective topic and is a hot button issue for many. The most important thing to remember is your audience. Who is it for?
